Dan Walkow - Florida and Snowbirds
Thursday, November 26 2009 @ 08:42 PM PST
David and Dan talk about cross-border investment especially with respect to Snowbirds and others from Canada residing in Florida. Another in the ongoing series of interviews and conversations between David Ingram and Dan.
Individual Segments
- Canadian - moved to California 20 years ago - didn't think there were any California taxes to file. David and Dan discuss the penalties this person might face if he (still) has a Canadian RRSP. And in the case of the RRSP it is not just California! The US Dept. of Treasury can impose a minimum $10,000 penalty if you have more than $10,000 US in out of country investments.
- Continuation of the discussion of the California client who is badly behind in filing US forms. Voluntary disclosure and what it implies.
- Foreign account declaration. What is a foreign account and what forms need to be filed? Dan's company also now deals in foreign currency exchange.
- Canadians in Florida - residency and taxation, Florida driver license, Snowbirds and those who purchase real estate. Tax issues and other issues.
- Continuation of discussion of Florida - benefits of dealing with Dan and Seabank Capital for investments. Canadian dollar accounts. Estate planning and putting the grand children's inheritance in a Canadian dollar account.
- Frozen investment accounts - you've left their jurisdiction and can't deal with the account anymore - you don't have to liquidate! Dan's company can transfer your account to their management without liquidating - and manage it for you no matter whether you stay in the US or move back and forth from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Examples of some strange documentation by Canadian banks on investments by US citizens in Canada.
